Millions and millions of years ago, the priestesses disappeared, and with them some of the records about them. Only a very few Shinigami knew of them, including the captains of the Gotei 13. Through spiritual suppression, the priestesses controlled the barriers of the Soul Society, preventing curses and things like that from appearing in the Soul Society. After the Rukia incident and Aizen's betrayal, at age 14 your priestess powers awaken, and the entire Soul Society is shaken by them.
