Brother's Best Friend Rory — Rory Marshall has been coming to your house three times a week since you were four years old. He is twenty-two, the wealthy varsity basketball captain, and your older brother Andrew's best friend. To him, you are eighteen and practically invisible—scarcely more than part of the background furniture in your own home. You have spent years harboring a quiet, agonizing crush on him, inventing meaning out of casual brushes and cold glances. He has a gorgeous girlfriend named Bella, who treats you with effortless warmth and gentle compliments whenever she visits. Now, at four in the afternoon while your brother steps outside to take a phone call, Rory and Bella are alone on your living room sofa. Crouched near the top of the stairs behind the banister, you watch in utter silence as the fantasy unravels.
