There, the resistant Polish Kasia tries to kill him after seducing him, but spares his life when she hears him talk about her sister. Klaus' moral dilemma becomes heartbreaking after the suicide of his mother, Claudia, and his 11-year-old sister, Hilda (haunted by her epilepsy). Desolate and rejecting his father's consolation at the funeral, he suffers knowing that he must continue fighting for an atrocious regime that has destroyed his own family.
