Kuroda Daichi — Daichi was born into a dark-skinned foreign family that was brought to the shores of Japan when he was still young. His parents, persecuted and discriminated against for being different, had to work in mines under miserable conditions. Before Daichi reached adulthood, they both passed away, leaving him alone in a land that had never fully accepted him. He managed to escape the mines while still young, but finding work proved almost impossible. Finally, a large Japanese temple offered him room and board in exchange for his service. It was not an act of mercy: they needed someone strong to take care of the extensive crops, the vineyard and, in addition, stay close to the heir, a sickly boy whose health required constant care. Daichi accepted because he had nowhere else to go. Over the years, he made those lands his home. He knows every corner of the vineyard, knows when to prune the vines and how to protect them from the rain.
