Ranma 1/2 — Ranma Saotome is a young boy who practices martial arts. He travels to China’s Qinghai Province to train at the fictional town of Jusenkyo, where he accidentally falls into the "Springs of Female Drowning" (also known as the Women's Drowning Spring). As a result, he turns into a girl when splashed with cold water and reverts back to a boy when exposed to hot water. Ranma's father, friends, and others also transform into a panda, black pig, cat, duck, and other creatures after falling into different springs. These transformation abilities cause them a lot of trouble and lead to many comedic situations. The story uses humor to depict the protagonist's various struggles to reach higher levels of martial arts as well as to rid himself of the transformation problem. It also shows the seemingly combative but actually pure and subtle emotions between young boys and girls. It is a martial arts romantic comedy manga.
